International School on Star Clusters with Gaia

Due to Gaia, a space observatory of the European Space Agency launched in December 2013, Star cluster research is experiencing a very exciting decade. With Gaia, we can probe the full life cycle of star clusters, from the properties of the molecular gas in which they form, to the properties of the stellar streams which dying clusters leave in their wake. The main aim of the school is to foster collaborations between the observers and modelers interested in the Gaia data. The school includes an overview of what the catalogue entails and practical methods to use it for particular scientific research, with a special focus on the potential for the Gaia data to be used in star cluster studies.

 

OBJECTIVES

 

Gaia is a space observatory of the European Space Agency, launched in December 2013. Gaia, being the successor to Hipparcos, aims to construct a three-dimensional (3D) map of about one billion point-like sources throughout the Galaxy and beyond with an unprecedented precision. It will observe not only stars, but also tens of thousands of quasars, unresolved galaxies, exoplanets, asteroids, comets and many transient and variable objects like supernovae. During the course of its mission which is initially planned for 5 years, Gaia will determine 3D positions and proper motions of stars down to V=20 mag and their radial velocities down to V=17 mag. Moreover, it will provide the detailed physical properties of each star observed: characterizing their luminosity, temperature, gravity, and elemental composition. This massive stellar census enables us to address a broad range of fundamental questions regarding the origin, structure and evolutionary history of the Milky Way (MW). Moreover, we will be able to constrain the gravitational dynamics and the potential of the MW, and also constrain the star-formation process on a parsec-scale and how it affects the morphology of galaxies.

 

In addition to the MW, star cluster research is experiencing a very exciting decade with Gaia using which we can probe the full life cycle of star clusters, from the properties of the molecular gas in which they form, to the properties of the stellar streams which dying clusters leave in their wake. The physical processes that shape young star clusters and stellar associations are relevant for Gaia as they leave kinematical imprints in the field of the MW. An analysis of Gaia data across the MW is likely to unambiguously determine the initial mass function (IMF) for field stars and the stars within star clusters and aggregates. This will settle the debate on whether the IMF is universal or a systematic IMF variation, deduced from the careful dynamical analysis of deep observations of globular clusters, is supported. Additionally, Gaia will improve the membership determination and distance estimation of star clusters and associations. Combined with detailed hydro and N-body simulations, Gaia enables us to unravel the formation and evolution history of these objects and constrain their initial conditions. Moreover, the internal dynamical features and sub-structures of nearby open clusters and associations, as well as any sign of tidal distortion due to e.g. encounters with giant molecular clouds, can be studied with Gaia.

 

In order to interpret the Gaia data and to exploit fully and meaningfully the data for research projects, the active collaboration of observers and modellers is critically needed. The first data release of Gaia was in September last year and the second data release is scheduled for 2017.This motivated us to organize a school on Gaia, at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Sciences (IASBS, Zanjan, Iran) to foster collaborations between the scientists interested in Gaia data. The school includes a basic introduction to the mission concept, an overview of what the catalogue entails and practical methods to use it for particular science researches, with a special focus on the potential of Gaia data for star cluster studies.

 

Registration

The registration fee is currently estimated to be 200 Euro(non Iranian participants), 5000000 IRR(Iranian participants), including all local costs: the accommodation (IASBS guest-house for 5-days), lunch & dinner (for 5-days) and transportation by Taxi/Bus from IKA airport (Tehran) to Zanjan.
